Sport Ladder
Special thanks to Bob Malowney, Thad Winzenz and the US National YoYo
Contest
for developing the sports ladder divisions and the videos.
Sports String Trick Rules:
- The 1S Sports division is open to any player not competing in any of
the six
World Championship divisions.
- A special Worlds Sports String Trick Division, which does not carry a
world
title, is open to contestants who have entered 1A, 2A, 3A, 4A-OS, 5A-CW or
AP.
- You may compete in both the 1S and 2S Sports divisions to qualify for the
'Best All Around' Sports Division Award.
- For the Sport String Trick ladder, one attempt per trick is allowed. One
missed trick will be allowed on the ladder, the second miss retires the
player from the ladder. The score will be based on the highest number trick
completed, and the highest number first missed trick will be used as the tie
breaker.
- The score for 'Best All Around' will be based on the combined highest
number
of tricks completed on both ladders, and the highest combined number of first
missed tricks will be used as the tie breaker.
- A trick is complete when the string is fully wound around the axle and
back
in the hand.
- After trick six (6), the yo-yo may be returned to the Throwhand utilizing
a
bind if you so desire. An unsuccessful bind attempt will be considered a
miss. The yo-yo must be caught with one hand, the hand that originally threw
the yo-yo, and not trapped against the body. More than five inches of string
remaining outside the yo-yo when caught is considered a miss. String misses
or significant loss of control of a yo-yo will not be allowed on any tricks.
- A trick starts and finishes within the trick box. A player must keep feet
planted on all tricks. If a player’s feet leave the trick box during a
trick it may be considered a miss.
- A throw made within the trick box counts as an attempt. Outside the trick
box
a player may only toss a throw-down, spinner, forward pass, a single loop, a
single hop the fence, or string adjustments. Practicing a contest trick
outside the trick box during the judging session is considered a miss.
- Any yo-yo may be used. A player may adjust the yo-yo and string. An
unintentional broken or knotted string may be replaced. A yo-yo may not be
dismantled during the judging session without the approval of the judge.
You may change out a yo-yo only one time on this ladder. However, a judge has
the discretion to allow replacement of a yo-yo if the yo-yo is unintentional
damaged.
Sports String Trick Awards:
Sports String Trick Awards will be given to the winners of the following age
groups: 10 & under, 11-12, 13-16, 17-29, 30-44, 45 & over. The 1S Sports
division is open to any player not competing in any of the six World
Championship divisions. The contestant with the highest combined score for
the 1S and 2S ladders will be given the 'Best All Around' Sports Division
Award.
In addition, one award will be given to the winner of the Worlds Sports
String Trick Division (no age groups). The Worlds Level Sports Division does
not
carry a world title and is open only to contestants who have entered 1A, 2A,
3A, 4A-OS, 5A-CW or AP.
With your palm up, throw the yo-yo down. After the yo-yo leaves your hand turn your hand over and let the yo-yo spin for at least three seconds. Tug the string and catch the yo-yo (no binds allowed).
Throw a Sleeper and let the yo-yo roll on the floor for at least one foot. Tug the string and catch the yo-yo (no binds allowed).
3. Breakaway (shoulder to shoulder): [VIDEO]Throw the yo-yo out to the Throwhand side so that it reaches the end of the string near shoulder high while sleeping. Let it continue to swing downward and go halfway around the world. When the yo-yo reaches shoulder high on the opposite side tug the string and catch the yo-yo (no binds allowed).
4. Rock the Baby (3 full rocks): [VIDEO]Throw a Sleeper and fold the string around your Freehand and form a triangle, or cradle, by pinching the string between your thumb and index finger of your Throwhand. Perform three full rocks of the yo-yo through the cradle. During each full rock the yo-yo passes through the cradle twice, once on the way out and once again on the way back. (Most variations of how the cradle is formed are acceptable.) Lower the yo-yo to the Sleeper position, tug on the string and catch the yo-yo (no binds allowed).
5. Flying Saucer (Also known as Sleeping Beauty and UFO): [VIDEO]Throw yo-yo to either side causing the yo-yo to start corkscrewing and either tightening or loosening the string. Pick up string with Freehand and raise the yo-yo so it is at or near the level of your Throwhand. Now drop the string off your Freehand and let the yo-yo return to your hand (no binds allowed).
6. Dizzy Baby (3 full rocks and 3 spins): [VIDEO]Perform three full rocks of Rock the Baby and then perform three Pinwheels through the cradle. Lower the yo-yo to the Sleeper position, tug on the string and catch the yo-yo (no binds allowed).
7. Brain Twister (1 somersault): [VIDEO]Throw a Sleeper and then perform a front mount. Now let your Throwhand index finger come up around the yo-yo and push the string segments half way between the yo-yo and the Freehand index finger causing the yo-yo to rotate around your Freehand completing a somersault. Perform any dismount and catch the yo-yo (binds allowed).
Throw a Breakaway and catch the yo-yo on the string over your index finger of your Freehand and let the yo-yo spin on the string. Perform any dismount and catch the yo-yo (binds allowed).
Throw a Breakaway and let the yo-yo string wrap your Freehand index finger, and then wrap over your Throwhand index finger and continue over your Freehand index finger a second time. As the yo-yo comes over your index finger catch the yo-yo on the string segment furthest from your body. Perform any dismount and catch the yo-yo (binds allowed).
10. Split the Atom (3 somersaults): [VIDEO]Throw a split-bottom mount and perform a pass under the yo-yo with your Freehand index finger, then push forward into the double string segments with your Freehand index finger followed by a pass under the yo-yo with your Throwhand index finger. Now push back on the string segments and perform 3 somersaults. Perform any dismount and catch the yo-yo (binds allowed).
11. Double-On Trapeze (Lindy Loop): [VIDEO]Throw a trapeze mount and let the yo-yo continue over the index finger and catch the yo-yo on the string again. Perform any dismount and catch the yo-yo (binds allowed).
12. Advanced Split the Atom (3-3-3): [VIDEO]Throw a Sleeper and perform three front Pinwheels. Lower the yo-yo back to the Sleeper position and perform a split-bottom mount. Now perform three Barrel Rolls. Next perform the two pass unders of Split the Atom followed by three somersaults. Perform any dismount and catch the yo-yo (binds allowed).
Start with a split-bottom mount and perform a pass under the yo-yo with the index finger of your Freehand, continue the motion of your Freehand and pass over your Throwhand index finger, now perform a second pass under. You are now in the Mach 5 hold. With the yo-yo held between your index fingers, rotate your hands forwards around the yo-yo three times. Perform any dismount and catch the yo-yo (binds allowed).
14. Boing-E-Boing (5 Reps): [VIDEO]Start with a split-bottom mount and while holding your Freehand still, cause the yo-yo to bounce out and back between string segments by performing short and quick up and down movements of your Throwhand. Each rep consists of a full bounce contacting the front and back segments. Complete five reps. Perform any dismount and catch the yo-yo (binds allowed).
15. McBride Roller Coaster: [VIDEO]Throw a side Around the World, continue into a second side world into a one-and-a-half mount, unwind into a reverse one and-a-half mount, unwind into a Double or Nothing, then roll back into a trapeze, and then roll into a Triple or Nothing. Perform any dismount and catch the yo-yo (binds allowed).
Throw a trapeze mount and perform three hops (or pops). Hands don't need to touch during the three hops but each hop must use at least half the length of the string. Perform any dismount and catch the yo-yo (binds allowed).
Start with a Double or Nothing. Bring your Throwhand under the yo-yo, landing it on the outermost upper string, and then push your Throwhand index finger into the double strings. Bring your Freehand under the yo-yo, landing it on the outermost upper string, and pull your Freehand index finger out leaving you in a 1.5-mount. Sling the yo-yo over towards your Freehand, and then back over your Throwhand, letting the yo-yo wrap around your index finger one more time. Unravel the wraps and land the yoyo back into a trapeze hold. Perform any dismount and catch the yo-yo (binds allowed).
Full momentum trapeze mount into an inside somersault continuing into a Lindy loop, and then unwind the Lindy loop with an outside reverse somersault into a reverse Lindy loop. Unwind the reverse Lindy loop and intentionally miss landing a Lindy loop and land it on the flip over. Perform any dismount and catch the yo-yo (binds allowed).
Perform a split-bottom mount directly into a Mach 5 hold (no string shortening somersaults allowed). The yo-yo will be on top of the strings between the Throwhand (front) and Freehand (back). Perform a pop and quickly switch the position of the Throwhand and Freehand. The yo-yo will now be on the bottom string in a split-bottom mount. Perform a second upward pop, and again quickly switch the position of the Throwhand and Freehand. The yo-yo should be back on top of the strings completing one rep. Complete a second rep by performing two more pops. Perform any dismount and catch the yo-yo (binds allowed).
Throw a trapeze mount, then perform an upward pop into a wrist-crossed one-and-a-half mount hold (with Throwhand over Freehand), then roll Throwhand over and under Freehand into a wrist-crossed one-and-a-half mount hold (with Freehand over Throwhand), then pop to a double or nothing hold, then pop to a trapeze hold. Perform any dismount and catch the yo-yo (binds allowed). Note that yo-yo must be popped upward on all three hops, and on the first pop the Throwhand must be clearly crossed over the Freehand so that the yo-yo is caught in the middle of a 'close to' horizontal wrist-crossed one-and-a-half mount hold.
Throw a trapeze mount. Next press your Throwhand thumb and index finger together, over the string, and wrap the string under your thumb and over the outside of your index finger by rolling your wrist towards your body. Now perform a "Magic Drop" by letting the yo-yo roll down the string and under and over your Throwhand index finger onto the string segment nearest your body. You will now be holding the yo-yo in a modified trapeze mount with the string going over your thumb and Throwhand and with your index fingers spreading the string segments of the trapeze. Now, while making sure not to drop the string off your Throwhand index finger, let the yo-yo roll back down the string under and over your Freehand index finger landing on the string nearest your body. Now let the string drop off your Throwhand index finger and also let the outer segment drop off your Freehand index finger. You should now be back in a trapeze hold. Complete two more reps. Perform any dismount and catch the yo-yo (binds allowed).
Throw a Breakaway over Freehand index finger (not over thumb) into a wrist-bucket mount; perform a double pass under with Freehand index finger. Pop yo-yo up, bring Throwhand under and catch yo-yo on outermost string segment. Pop yoyo up, uncross arms, and catch yo-yo over Freehand index finger back into wrist-bucket mount (Note that the yo-yo has to pass through the triangle formed over your Throwhand and land on bottom string segment). Perform a double pass under with Freehand index finger onto back string segment and pull into trapeze hold. Perform any dismount and catch the yo-yo (binds allowed).
23. Suicide Catch (2 Reps): [VIDEO]Throw a trapeze mount, let the yo-yo swing under the Throwhand and pull your Freehand index finger out of the wrap and let the string segments loop over your Throwhand. As the loop comes over the Throwhand poke your Freehand index finger back into the loop. At this point you should be back in a trapeze hold completing one rep. Perform a second rep back to a trapeze hold. Perform any dismount and catch the yo-yo (binds allowed).
Throw a trapeze mount, grab an open loop with Throwhand, pop yo-yo out of trapeze, lasso yo-yo with a whip catch with the open loop, and roll back to a trapeze hold. Perform a second rep. Perform any dismount and catch the yo-yo (binds allowed).
Throw a trapeze mount. Pop the yo-yo off the Trapeze, and pinch the string between the pointer and middle fingers on the Freehand. With the Throwhand, throw the string over the Freehand arm, forming a "U", and allow the part of the "U" furthest from you to mount itself onto the yo-yo in one continuous motion. Swing the yo-yo clockwise over the Freehand and Throwhand and you will be back in a trapeze hold. Perform any dismount and catch the yo-yo (binds allowed).

- The score for 'Best All Around' will be based on the combined highest
number
of tricks completed on both ladders, and the highest combined number of first
missed tricks will be used as the tie breaker.
- A trick is complete when the string is fully wound around the axle and
back
in the hand. The yo-yo must be caught with one hand, the hand that originally
threw the yo-yo, and not trapped against the body. More than five inches of
string remaining outside the yo-yo when caught is considered a miss.
Significant loss of control of a yo-yo will not be allowed on any tricks.

dismantled during the judging session without the approval of the judge.
- You may not change out a yo-yo during the first 15 tricks of this ladder.
However, a judge has the discretion to allow a replacement yo-yo if the
original yo-yo is unintentional damaged.
- After trick number 15, yo-yo(s) may be changed. Tricks 16 though 25 must
be
performed with the same pair of yo-yos. However, a judge has the discretion
to allow replacement of a yo-yo if the yo-yo is unintentional damaged.
Sports Looping Awards:
Sports Looping Awards will be given to the winners of the following age
groups: 10 & under, 11-12, 13-16, 17-29, 30-44, 45 & over. The 2S Sports
division is open to any player not competing in any of the six World
Championship divisions. The contestant with the highest combined score for
the 1S and 2S ladders will be given the 'Best All Around' Sports Division
Award.
In addition, one award will be given to the winner of the Worlds Sports
Looping Division (no age groups). The Worlds Level Sports Division does not
carry a world title and is open only to contestants who have entered 1A, 2A,
3A, 4A-OS, 5A-CW or AP.
Start with your Throwhand at your side with the palm of your Throwhand facing backward. Swing your arm forward and let the yo-yo drop out of your hand so the yo-yo goes straight out horizontally. As soon as the yo-yo reaches the end of the string pull the yo-yo back to your hand and catch the yo-yo.
Start with a Forward Pass throw but don't catch the yo-yo as it returns. Instead, guide the yo-yo back out with a flick of your wrist on the inside of your arm. At this point you have completed one rep. Perform two or more additional reps and catch the yo-yo.
3. Tidal Wave (also known as Skin the Cat):
[VIDEO]Throw a Sleeper and place your Freehand index finger behind the string in contact with the string and your Throwhand. Now pull down on the string with your Throwhand and in one continuous motion cause the yoyo to go over your Freehand index finger. As the yo-yo comes over your Freehand index finger throw it out with a flick of your wrist into a loop. Catch the yo-yo as it returns back to your hand.
Throw an Around the World and as the yo-yo tries to return to your hand don't catch it. Instead, using a Punching Bag motion, regenerate into a retro Around the World and catch the yo-yo after a full rotation back to a Sleeper.
Throw yo-yo down with a Gravity Pull motion. As the yo-yo comes back up the string let it hop over the palm of your Throwhand sending it back down with a roll of your wrist. At this point you have completed one rep of Hop the Fence. Complete two or more additional reps and catch the yo-yo.
This trick starts just like Hop the Fence but as the yo-yo returns let it hop over the top of your Throwhand and downward towards your body as the yo-yo returns again let it hop outward over the top of your Throwhand and back down. At this point you have completed one rep of Planet Hop. Complete two or more additional reps and catch the yo-yo. Note that this trick is like an upside down Reach for the Moon.
Same as trick number two except perform ten or more reps and catch the yo-yo.
8. Sidewinder (Both Sides):
[VIDEO]This trick is performed in two parts. Throw a Sleeper and move your Throwhand to one side and then tug on the string to make it return. As the yo-yo returns it should corkscrew because your hand is off to the side and not directly above the yoyo. The corkscrewing will either tighten or loosen the string. As the yo-yo gets even with your Throwhand catch the yo-yo to the side. Repeat this trick to the other side. This is the only non-looping trick in this ladder but it is included since this is the string adjustment method used by most two-hand players.
9. Warp Drive (3 Regenerations):
[VIDEO]Throw a Forward Pass and as the yo-yo returns towards your Throwhand regenerate into an Around the World. As the yoyo returns towards your hand, regenerate again into a second Around the World. Regenerate one more time and catch the yo-yo after the third Around the World.
10. Reach for the Moon (3 Reps):
[VIDEO]Start with an upward Forward Pass type throw and as the yo-yo returns towards your Throwhand let the yo-yo loop under your wrist and shoot straight upward. As the yo-yo comes back down throw the yo-yo outward with a looping action along the same path as the original upward Forward Pass throw. At this point you have completed one rep of Reach for the Moon. Complete two or more additional reps and catch the yo-yo.
11. Inside/Outside Loop (10 Reps):
[VIDEO]Start with an Inside loop and as the yo-yo returns cause the yo-yo to loop to the outside of your Throwhand. This completes one rep of the trick consisting of one Inside loop followed by one Outside loop. Continue alternating between Inside/Outside loop until you have completed ten or more reps and catch the yo-yo.
Same as trick number six except perform ten or more reps and catch the yo-yo.
13. Vertical Punches (10 Reps):
[VIDEO]Your may throw the yo-yo directly up into Vertical Punches or you may also start with a Reach for the Moon start and commence the Vertical Punches as the yo-yo starts its vertical loop around your Throwhand. Perform ten or more reps and catch the yo-yo.
14. Punching Bag (10 Reps):
[VIDEO]You may start this trick with Hop the Fence and work up into Punching Bag or immediately start with Punches that are all between 45 degrees and 135 degrees of vertical. Perform ten or more reps and catch the yo-yo.
15. Fountain (3-3-3)
This trick starts with three reps of Hop the Fence (under 45 degrees), followed by a transition to three reps of Punching Bag (between 45 & 135 degrees), ending with a transition up to three Vertical Punches (above 135 degrees). Catch the yo-yo after the third rep of Vertical Punches. You may not perform more than three reps of any of the three elements of this trick.
16. 2-Hand Loops (10 Reps):
[VIDEO]Perform 10 or more reps of Inside Loops with each hand and catch both yo-yos. The loops may be performed simultaneously or alternately. The count starts on the second hand completing a loop.
17. Milk the Cow (10 Reps):
[VIDEO]Perform 10 or more reps of Hop the Fence with each hand and catch both yo-yos. The hops may be performed simultaneously or alternately. The count starts on the second hand completing a hop.
18. Ride the Horse (10 Reps):
[VIDEO]This trick is Inside Loops with one hand while performing ten or more reps of Hop the Fence, behind you, with the other hand. You must stand with both feet lined up together. The count will start when one hand is looping and the Hop the Fences are behind your heals as the yo-yo reaches the end of the string. Once the count starts, all the Hop the Fences must stay behind your heals.
This trick is performed by doing Inside Loops with one hand while performing ten or more reps of Reach for the Moon with the other hand. You may start the loops first and then start the Moons or you can start both yo-yos at the same time. The count will be on the Moons after looping has commenced.
Start with one rep of Warp Drive simultaneously with each hand (see trick description number nine above). With one hand perform a second rep of Warp Drive while with the other hand punch into a retro Around the World as in a Time Warp (see trick description number nine above). Catch both yo-yos after the World/retro-World combination.
21. 2-Hand Vertical Punches (10 Reps):
[VIDEO]You may start by throwing the yo-yos directly upward into Vertical Punches or you may start them from a Forward Pass/Reach for the Moon start. Perform 10 or more reps of Vertical Punches with each hand and catch both yo-yos. The punches may be performed simultaneously or alternately. The count starts on the second hand completing a Vertical Punch.
22. Sword & Shield (3 Reps):
[VIDEO]This trick must start with an Around the World and end after at least three worlds. The loops must start during the first world and at least one loop must pass through the trajectory of each of the three (or more) worlds. If one or more additional worlds are thrown, at least one loop must pass through the trajectory of each additional world.
23. Clione (also known as Fantasia)
Start with three or more reps of Milk the Cow and transition each hand to outside Hop the Fence, now perform a behind the back Fountain by bringing the outside hops up to Vertical Punches. Perform three or more reps of Vertical Punches and catch both yo-yos. The elements of this trick may be performed simultaneously or alternately.
24. Staircase (also known as Tornado or Circular Fountain):
[VIDEO]This trick starts with three or more reps of Milk the Cow in front, or to one side, and works its way up into Vertical Punches while the player rotates a full 360 degrees. After both feet are planted, perform three or more reps of Vertical Punches and catch both yo-yos.
25. Kurukuru Milk (also known as Rolling Cows, 5 Reps):
[VIDEO]You may start this trick with one or more reps of Milk the Cow and move into wrist-roll Milk the Cows or you may start immediately with wrist-roll Milk the Cows. Once your wrists are rolling over each other, perform five or more reps of wrist-roll Milk the Cows and catch both yo-yos. Alternately, after the five reps are completed, you may move out of the wrist roll cows, back to be Milk the Cows, and then catch both yo-yos.
