Henrys Viper

The Viper is a very popular subject for modding. Let's cut to the chase, here are the mods!

SAGE's Viper Mod as told by Nathan

Needed:
1 Viper (old style) (it MAY work on a new style also)
1 set of rubber rings from a Yomega Rev Rim (2 rims)
1 Variflex/Team Losi sidecap
1 turbo disc (either TK or homemade)
2 or 3 Viper distance plates (I used 3, 2 will work - less MAY)
exacto knife or other cutting device

Steps:
1: Put the Rev-Rim rims in the Viper (to get rims out of the Rev-Rim, undo screws on the inside of the yo-yo)

2: Make a starburst disc out of the sidecap:
a) Make diameter of cap smaller so it will fit on the Viper hub
b) Punch a hole in the center of the cap so it will fit around the bearing hole
c) Cut a starburst into the cap
d) glue or tape to the NON axle side of the Viper

3: Add a turbo disc to the axle side of the Viper (you may need to make the hole in the middle larger

4: Add 2 or 3 shims to the axle (I prefer 3) (Place on the side of the bearing that touches the hub, you must remove the axle)

5: Adjust gap, use

This may be my best 1 hand yo-yo.

Roger's Cheap Rip-off of Mo's Mod

This mod is very easy to do, and is very good. I had one like this with me at Worlds, I let people try it and it won rave reviews. Mo did something like this a while back, but it was much more hi-tech (involving lathes and stuff, I don't know), but this seems to work just fine for me.

You Need:
Viper Shells (2)
Yoyojam Minijam
Tape (I've used masking tape and electrical tape)

Take the rubber o-rings off the Minijam and put them somewhere, you're not going to need them. Cut the tape into thin strips that will fit inside the groove on the Minijam, where the o-rings used to be. Put several wraps of tape on each side. Put the Viper shells on the Minijam (in the grooves, where the tape is). They should fit on snugly because of the tape. If they won't go on, use less tape; if they are still loose, use more. That's about all there is to it. It is completely reversable, though if you wanted it a little sturdier you could glue in the shells. This is a great mod; it leaves the Viper heavier, wider, and smooth as silk. It ends up pretty wide though, so this may be a better choice for offstring, depending on your style of play.

Blake's Elusive Viper Mod

Things Needed:
1x Viper (Old Style Only)
2x Henry's Distance Plates/Distance Spacers/Shims
Exacto Knife
5/16" Socket Wrench
Cork Backed Ruler
Toothpick
Some sort of tub to put parts into so you don't lose them.

Start by taking the outside rubber shells off of the aluminum hubs. Now take the black O-ring off the Viper axle by sticking the toothpick under the O-ring and pulling it up and off. Next take the axle out by unscrewing it with the 5/16" socket wrench. Take the cork backed ruler and set it vertically on the aluminum hub, hold it steady while cutting a slight gash in the hub with you exacto knife. After the vertical cut is finished continue by cutting a horizontal gash. Your viper should look like this-

You can gain more response by making the cuts deeper. I recommend cutting just slightly at first and trying the viper then making the cuts deeper if it does not have enough response.

Finishing the job-
Take all your parts, including the two extra distance plates. Put the two distance plates in the side of the axle that touches the wall of the hub. Put everything back in the way you had it to begin with and Whabam! you have my favorite Viper modification. It is to be said that doing this mod incorrectly can sufficiently jack up your viper so do it at your own risk.

Performance Ring Mod
Hello, this is my page on how to modify your Henry's AXYS Viper, using performance rings and a spacer. I will tell you how to make your own performance rings, and how to add spacers to your Viper, to make it play a whole lot better. Adding the spacer moves over the bearing, exposing most of it, making it a ton smoother. Adding the performance ring make's the yoyo ton's more responsive. The performance rings need to be replaced periodically, but they are practically free, and easy to make, so it's not a big deal. Also, the break in time is only a couple of minutes, because of the Viper's adjustable gap, which allows you to controll the amount of response that you want. Anyways, let's get goin'.

These are the supplies you will need to modify your AXYS Viper (If you are modifying a OLD Viper, you can't use the "o-ring spacer", and you need to buy a few Henry's spacers, or find some in a hardwear store instead):

  • Rubbermaid Tub Treads (about $3 at Wallmart, in the Rubbermaid section)
  • A big blue paper puncher (about $2, found at the craft section at Walmart)
  • A regular silver paper puncher (about $1, found about anywhere)
  • A little o-ring (about $.20, and any hardwear store, in the o-ring section)
The first step to modifying your Viper is to make the Performance Rings out of the Tub Treads. So your stick a Tub Tread into the Big Blue Puncher (may be a tight squeeze). Then you just step on the puncher, and a circle will pop out : )
Next, you have to use the Regular Puncher to punch out the middle part of the Tub Tread Circle, so it will fit over the bearing. So you just put the circle into the puncher, and punch a progressively bigger hole, until it will fit over the bearing without rubbing against it.
Now you just peel the backing off of one of 'em, and stick it onto the side of the viper that the bearing isn't in, like this:

Now you are done with making the performance ring, and the yoyo is almost ready to play with!!
The next modification you have to make to the viper is adding a spacer. So you gotta go out and buy the o-ring mentioned above.

First step is you gotta unscrew the bearing assembly from the yoyo. So you have to pop off the o-ring that's on the axys, and then use a small wrench to unscrew it.
Once the bearing is unscrewed, you get ahold of the little o-ring that you just bought.
You then stick that little o-ring spacer onto the screws of the axys bearing assembly (it should fit snuggly):
Now you stick the bearing back into the yoyo like this, and screw it back in. After it is screwed back in, just put the o-ring back on that you popped off earlier.

Gibberish's Viper Mod
Here are the instructions... Ok, all you need is a clear plastic medical tape [3M Transpore Tape is pictured], and some scissors... That's all!!! The mod gives the yo-yo starbursts!!! Here's how you do it:
Cut out about 20 little rectangles of the tape out. They should be as long as the tape is wide, and about 1 cm wide.
Now take the Viper apart. You are going to use the sides of the Viper that the bearing is not in. So you take that half, and you take one of the "Tape Rectangles", and you stick it so that the LONG side of the tape is right up against the whole that the bearing goes in. The piece of tape, but should look crooked, at an angle. Next, you are going to do the same thingwith the piece of tape, but over a little bit. The pieces of tape should be overlaping... Do this all the way around. Now, there should be something with those angled starbursts, that looks like a blade! It should look like this...

Now carefully, peel the whole "blade" off, and using scissors, cut it into a regular circle, whatever size you want. Now it should look like this...

>>>>>

Now, stick it back in to the Viper, and now it has Starbursts. It should look like this when you are done, cutting out the circle. Now, just place the "blade" into the Viper.
These things last very long. If your viper still doesn't respond... Do the same thing to the othe rside of the yo-yo except have the tape angled the other direction. I hope somebody trys this and tells me what they think!
