I don't know how many of you know this, but I bet it's an embarrassingly high number because I probably talk about it all the time: I think branding a yo-yo is a really good idea. Now, I haven't done that yet, but Sonny did hook me up with a cautery for no reason other than because he's way too generous and supportive. I've been getting mad irresponsible with it all day, and here's my first two efforts.

The wooden yo-yo is (obviously) a rad tattoo strawberry. Obviously. The panda I was kind of just using as a test for how to do it on plastic, and I think I learned a lot even between the two halves... it was technically a houndstooth pattern, but since I didn't fill in alternating patches it might as well be a bunch of dancing cactuses. Actually, that's kind of awesome. Maybe I'll tell people that's what it is. I wanna do some more asymmetric stuff (whale vs. pirate ship?) soon, I'm really excited about this thing.

If anybody else has done this kind of stuff, I'd love to see it. If anybody else wants to do it, Sonny's mentioned to me that a woodburning pen would work, too, but if you're doing it on plastic I'd recommend wearing a respirator. I'm not 100% sure on the rules for that kind of stuff, but I'm pretty sure breathing in burning plastic fumes is never good.

Oh yeah, and if you're worried that it affects play, I can assure you that I don't get any backspin. I do, however, get the most marvelous starburst noise of all time. If that turns you off, you probably shouldn't do it. Also, I gave it a little satin to take off the harsh edges, 'cause those were definitely there and they probably would've cut strings and maybe people.<p><a href="http://www.yoyoguy.com/check2.cgi?yoyoingnewsrss:yoyo:/featured/index.shtml"><img src="http://www.yoyoing.com/banner/newyoyoguybanner.gif" border="1"></img></a>

Budget laptop advice? (13)

So, I've been wanting to get a laptop for a while now, and with the tax rebate this may be the time to finally do it. The problem is trying to figure out what to get. I've been building my own desktop for a while now, so the thought of trying to get a "name brand" computer is a bit odd. ;)

Basically I'm looking in the $500-700 range. Would probably use it mainly for programming, web surfing, and video/dvd watching. Maybe some video editing, maybe some Blender, but I won't be playing any intensive games on it. So it probably doesn't need an amazing video card..

Firewire input would be nice (especially to capture directly from a camcorder while off somewhere), but I know there's also third party cards you can get. S-video out would be cool as far as being able to watch some video on a TV without needing to burn a DVD. It seems like they all have DVD burners at this point, so that seems a moot question.

Don't really care about gigabit ethernet or bluetooth (don't have any bluetooth devices anyway..)

I'm kind of wary of Vista, so knowing that XP drivers exist would be nice, though I guess I can survive if it comes down to it. On the same track, the ability to install linux would be cool. Not an instant disqualification if it can't, but it'd be nice to know that I could..

Speakers don't need to be all that great, since I'd probably use headphones most of the time anyway. Always a plus if it has some kind of volume, though, just in case.

Not totally sure how I feel on battery life. I mean I'd probably use it plugged in most of the time. It isn't so much a travel laptop per se as a "don't have to sit in a chair all the time" computer. ;) Then again, maybe I'll end up using it outside a lot more once I actually get it and start using it!

Some of the Acer Aspire models seemed to have features I was looking for, but some reviews seemed to describe issues with the track pads (as an aside, I'm actually ok with those IBM "nipple" thingies..haha). It also sounds like they have no support to speak of..

I was thinking that something like a Toshiba Satellite might be the way to go? For instance, this seems it could be great. 2GB ram, 160GB HD, 15" screen, firewire, s-video out, media card reader, etc... for only $550:

For all that I said about features, the most important thing is something that's going to be relatively reliable. I probably won't beat it up as much as a lot of people would, so it doesn't need to be made of iron, but it needs to not like die after a year of normal use.. ;) Even if I end up getting a better one in a couple of years, it'd be nice to be able to hand it down to my mom or use it as a backup..

Thanks! :)<p><a href="http://www.yoyoguy.com/check2.cgi?yoyoingnewsrss:yoyo:/featured/index.shtml"><img src="http://www.yoyoing.com/banner/newyoyoguybanner.gif" border="1"></img></a>

All screwed up..... (17)

A few months ago, Alan & I began a discussion of making hollow tops where the top and bottom halves srcew together (like the Quicksilver). The benefits are both aesthetic: no hole in the crown, looks like a solid - not hollow - top, and even the possibility of interchangeable tops & bottoms; as well as practical: store the string inside & easier thin-wall hollowing for lighter weight (while leaving more weight at the top's "belt-line" where the weight is good).
Well, I’ve now made a few such tops. Ultimately, Alan and I both want to learn how to “chase” threads in wood, but for now I’m using threaded metal rings.

“Screw-together top” #1 (yes, I need a better name) is a standard sized (2”) top. The wood is Osage orange with a Cocobolo crown and a YYJ bearing tip.

http://images34.fotki.com/v1148/photos/3/35562/5804863/Screwtogethertop1pic5-vi.jpg

Screw-together top #2 it about the size as the QS/Trompo and is all Cocobolo with a delrin tip set-up using two 1/4"x1/2" bearings (large yo-yo bearings), and will convert from bearing to fixed (aka the Alan Gray tip design).

Screw-together top #3 is three and a half inches in diameter, made from Myrtle wood burl, and sports the same tip type as #2.

We meet at SFO at 5.30, I believe, then we are taking a Taxi to my house, dropping stuff off, then heading to the Mission to check out Self Edge, then meeting up with Kiya and Sonny, and we're going to get bad Chinese food.

Then we head back to my house, chill.

Friday we wake up, get breakfast, head to San Mateo, play the yoyo, ditch Zorba's, go get tonkatsu sandwiches down the street, play more of the yoyo, head back, chill.

Saturday Morning we meet up with Doc and team Spencer Berry, and take the Caltrain down to the contest.

Sunday I don't have a plan for. We should do Boogaloos.

Monday I don't have a plan for.

Things to bring:

Jacket: At night, SF gets to high 40s.

Small Bills: We will be taking the bus ($1.50 for 4 hours) and BART (reloadable card, $1.40 anywhere in SF, $5 out of SFO) around SF, and Caltrain (5.75) to the contest. The bus you can hop on, but if you have to pay, they don't have change. The other two you must pay for.

Gamecube Controllers: I only have 2, Brawl is 4 players.

Mario Kart Wii: I don't have it.

Sleeping stuff: I don't have extra blankets or pillows. I require all 3 of my pillows to sleep properly.

Let me know if you have any questions.

I was just wondering if anyone was going to the CEA meeting this Saturday. I've received news that if there were enough people going, a news reporter might show up to check it all out!
Great publicity for yo-yoing!
